Rowan Atkinson recounts a fascinating story about how the TV sitcom, Mr. Bean, got its name
For those who grew up in the '90s, Mr. Bean represents a treasure trove of joy and fond memories. The television sitcom was developed by actor Rowan Atkinson and British writer Richard Curtis. During a recent chat with Scott Mills on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show, Rowan recounted a fascinating story about the naming of the TV sitcom, Mr. Bean. The Man vs Baby actor mentioned that when they created Mr. Bean for the stage, it was simply a character without a name. However, when they chose to bring it to television, the pair opted to title the show after the character. At first, they referred to the character as Mr. White, but then they suddenly recalled a vegetable name and decided on the term, Bean. He was quoted as saying:
"He was a character, but he never had a name. Then we were going to put him on TV. We thought we should call the show after the character. He was called Mr White for a while, an extremely bland name, but then we did think of vegetables, for some reason, vegetables came into the discussion. There was Mr Cauliflower, Mr Courgette, we definitely went through a few, then Bean just struck us as a short, sharp, single syllable with a B in it. Generally speaking, words beginning with B are slightly funnier than words that aren’t in my opinion."

But at the same time, I wouldn’t want him in my house."
Rowan Atkinson refers to his character, Travis Bingley, as one of the nicest guy he portrayed on screen
At the same event, Rowan emphasized that out of all the roles he portrayed, 'Travis Bingley' is one of the nicest guy. He described his well-known character, Mr Bean, as self-centered, self-serving, and an anarchic kid. He subsequently referred to the character, Blackadder, as negative. He stated that he enjoyed portraying a nice character like Travis in films. He said, "Trevor Bingley, in his basic form, is arguably one of the nicest people I’ve ever played. Because I think most people I’ve played are sort of deeply unpleasant, really, you know, Mr Bean is a selfish, self-serving, anarchic child. Blackadder is a sort of sarcastic and sardonic, and basically negative force, I think. Even Johnny English is a sort of vain, sort of charmless. I think, actually, Trevor has turned out to be one of my more pleasant, amenable creations. I quite like playing the nice guy, which I haven’t done very often."
