Manekshaw, also known as Sam Bahadur, had served in the Indian army for nearly four decades and fought heroically in five wars: World War II (1942), the Indo-Pak Partition War (1947), the Sino-Indian War (1962), the Indo-Pak War (1965), and the War of Bangladesh Liberation (1971). Known to have evaded death several times throughout his term, he received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and a Military Cross for heroism (World War II). He was also the first army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army.
