Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, often known for his bold and controversial opinions, has once again addressed his viral 2015 comment about the late actress Sridevi. At the time, he had said that her fame was due not just to her acting talent, but also to her “thundering thighs” a remark that drew widespread criticism. Years later, Varma says he still stands by his statement, asking, “What is wrong with objectification?”
“Her Physique Also Contributed to Her Stardom”

In an interview with Zoom, RGV explained that Sridevi’s physical appearance was a part of her on-screen appeal, and therefore contributed to her success. He said, “Why should we avoid saying it? I never said she wasn’t a great actress. I only said this also contributed to her stardom.” Varma added that calling his remark objectification was ironic, saying the label itself objectifies the person being discussed.
If Sridevi Had Thin Legs, She Wouldn’t Be a Star
Varma went further, saying he personally believed that Sridevi’s physique played a significant role in her unique appeal. He compared it to other stars, saying, “If Amitabh Bachchan were six inches shorter, I’m not sure he’d become a huge star. If Shah Rukh Khan were six inches taller, I don’t know if he’d achieve the same stardom.”
His Teenage Admiration for Sridevi
Responding to the backlash the remark continues to generate, RGV said, “I believe she was an angel. No one deserved to touch her. That was my fantasy of her when I was a teenager.”
Sridevi’s Passing
Sridevi, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actresses, passed away in 2018 in Dubai due to accidental drowning in a bathtub.
