The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), which is referred to as the largest Indian film festival outside of India, will soon pay tribute to the legendary Guru Dutt. As part of its 2025 edition, IFFM is planning to hold special screenings of two of his most lauded films Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool. Guru Dutt, who is still lauded for impeccable storytelling and equally flawless human narratives has left an indelible impact on generations of filmmakers and cinephiles globally. His films - which are known for aesthetic brilliance, and social relevance - are timeless in not just their appeal, but also artistic impact. With this tribute, IFFM aims at commemorating not just the man, but also the legacy of a true auteur.

Festival Director, Mitu Bhowmick Lange too shared her perspective on the special tribute. Mitu appreciated Guru Dutt for being far ahead of his time - not just in terms of cinematic technique, but also emotional depth of his narratives. For Mitu. his iconic films including Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool are not just classics, they are referred to as cultural treasures "that speak to the soul of Indian cinema". "At IFFM, we believe it is essential to honour those who shaped our cinematic heritage. This tribute is our humble way of remembering his genius and introducing his timeless work to new global audiences.”
