She started her career at the age of 42 and worked in some of the biggest hit films. However, she still never became a star because she mostly got the chance to play the roles of mother or sister of big heroes. Even though she worked with big names from the industry, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor, she never ended up becoming a “star.”
Despite the fact that this actress started her career pretty late, she has worked in more than 119 films till now. Known for playing the roles of mothers and sisters, her passion for acting has also seeped into her lineage. Her daughter is an actress as well.
Her daughter, Divya Seth, was Shah Rukh Khan’s batchmate in Barry John’s theatre group. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan considers her his best friend. He has even credited her with “teaching him acting.”
The actress we are talking about is none other than Sushma Seth, who started her career at the age of 42, but despite working with superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor, she never became a star. She made her debut at the age of 42 with the 1978 film Junoon, in which she played the role of Shashi Kapoor’s aunt.
In the next few decades, Sushma Seth played the mother or grandmother of many Bollywood superstars, including Rishi Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Anil Kapoor, and Preity Zinta. Sushma Seth never became a top heroine of Bollywood, but she is known for her iconic roles in some blockbuster films like Silsila, Prem Rog, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Chandni, Deewana, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Sushma Seth was last seen in the film Mehram. She played the role of Noor Bibi in the movie. She also appeared in the 2021 short film Ek Jhalak—A Glimpse.
She now works with an NGO named Aparna and directs plays and dance dramas. Her daughter Divya Seth, Shah Rukh Khan’s best friend, is still active in the film industry and was last seen in the 2024 film Article 370.
