Actress Rati Agnihotri, known for films like Coolie and Ek Duuje Ke Liye, married renowned architect Anil Virwani in 1985. At the time, she was at the peak of her career. After marriage, she left films and hoped for a simple married life. But her life didn't turn out as she had imagined. She faced domestic violence in their penthouse in Worli.
In an interview, Rati Agnihotri revealed a 30-year-old secret. She disclosed that she had been subjected to abuse since the early years of her marriage. For nearly thirty years, she went through this suffering, yet still showed the world a picture of a happy family, smiling through it all. She claimed that the beatings occurred in areas where no one could see the injuries, thus extending her pain.
Rati became a mother a year after her marriage. Her son, Tanuj Virwani, was born in 1986. She explained that she stayed in the marriage for two reasons—first, she considered marriage a sacred bond; and second, her son was her greatest support and responsibility. She always tried to move forward, hoping that things would get better with time.
Rati said she constantly waited for her husband to change. She prayed that one day her family would truly be happy. This continued until March 7, 2015, when Tanuj was away shooting in Pune. That day, Rati faced her husband's anger again. She was hiding behind a wooden door, trying to save herself.
She thought, I am 54 years old now, and I will only get weaker every day. One day I will be killed. This realization was the breaking point for her. Finally, on March 14, 2015, she went to the police station alone and filed a complaint of domestic violence. After filing the complaint, Rati never returned to her old home. She moved to her bungalow in Lonavala and started her life anew.
When her son, Tanuj, learned about everything, he stood by his mother without question. He later even tried to mend his parents' relationship. Following the complaint, Rati chose both peace and distance in her life. She composed herself, built a new life with her son, and prioritized her mental health. It was a difficult but necessary decision for her.
Today, Rati Agnihotri's life has changed considerably. As per the Hindustan Times, she has been spending almost all of her time in Poland, where she runs a restaurant with her sister Anita, and her son Tanuj is working on his acting career in India.
